　　在过去的60多年里，一个诺奖经济学家在日食时发现的奇怪现象一直困扰着物理学家们，至今争议不断。这个现象似乎违反了经典引力理论，但是还没人能完美地解释这个现象，也没有人确信这个现象究竟是否存在。

　　在中学里我们学过单摆，单摆就是把重物挂在一根绳子上荡起来就成了。拉动单摆，单摆会以固定周期晃动。但是如果我们观察足够长的时间，就会发现单摆的摆动面会逐渐转动。这种转动是地球的自转造成的，在南半球是逆时针，在北半球是顺时针。

　　这个现象也叫进动，单摆的进动最早是法国物理学家莱昂·傅科（Léon Foucault）在19世纪发现的，因此这种单摆也叫做傅科摆，它首次为地球自转提供了天文学之外的证据。

　　不管是今天测还是明天测，物理学家们并不认为傅科摆的进动会有什么不同，因此也没有人每天观察傅科摆。实际上美国国家航空航天局（NASA）指出，历史上对傅科摆的长期研究只有两例，而这两个实验都是诺奖学者实施的。

　　第一个是在1913年获得诺贝尔物理学奖的荷兰人海克·卡末林·昂内斯（Heike Kamerlingh Onnes），另一个是1988年的诺贝尔经济学得主法国经济学家莫里斯·阿莱（Maurice Allais）。

　　阿莱曾连续30天在巴黎的实验室里不停地玩傅科摆，每隔14分钟就释放摆锤一次，同时记录下数据，比如转动的角度。

　　在这30天里碰巧出现了1954年的日食，因此他观察到了一个反常识的现象：在日食期间，单摆的摆动面居然往回调了！但是在日食之后，单摆又恢复了正常，摆动面恢复了每分钟0.19度的均匀转速。后来在1959年，阿莱在57米深的地下再次重复了实验，得到了类似的结果。

　　这个实验结果非常惊人，是经典的引力理论所无法解释的，因此被归为“引力异常现象”。也因为这个观察，1959年阿莱获得了法国航空航天协会颁发的Galabert 奖，并在同年获得了美国引力研究基金会（the United States Gravity Research Foundation）的荣誉。

　　这个现象后来被称为阿莱效应（Allais effect），阿莱在1988年的诺奖致辞中还郑重其事地把它拿出来论述了一番。在他这个令人意外的发现发表后，众多研究者尝试复制，结果出现了截然不同的两派。

　　比如，在1970年3月美国的全日食期间，哈佛大学的物理学研究者 Erwin Saxl 和 Mildred Allen 利用扭摆得到了支持性的结果。这些研究者称：“这个结果是无法用经典引力理论解释的。”后来这项研究被发表在1971年的 Physical Review D 上。

　　在1997年3月9日我国漠河的全日食期间，英国国家物理实验室的杨新社和中科院的同事也观察到了奇特的引力异常，为阿莱的说辞提供了侧面支持。

　　但1954年苏格兰和1965年意大利的观测却无法支持阿莱的结论。1991年和2010年发表在 Physical Review D 上的两项分别在芬兰和阿根廷做的观测也都宣称没有检测到阿莱效应。

　　在众多相互矛盾的研究前，阿莱虽不轻易退缩，但也没有十足的把握。1988年在诺奖致辞中阿莱表示：“在1954年6月30日的全日食期间，圆锥摆锤的振动面出现了异常。1952年和1953年的观测无法让我得到任何确切的结论。一些实验仪器得到了这个效应，但是另一些仪器却没有。所有这些现象都是目前的主流理论很难解释的。”

　　研究日食时发生的物理现象确实很困难，因为日食的时间很短，因此观测到的现象可能是其他环境因素，比如地质活动引起的。一些人认为，阿莱的单摆可能受到了温度、压力、湿度等环境因素的影响，不关引力的事。

　　为了揭开这个困扰着物理学家们45年的谜团，1999年8月11日，NASA 集结了来自4大洲的7国家的观测站，进行了一次跨国实验。

　　当时这个项目的领导者 David Noever 称：“对阿莱原始实验数据的解释有三条，一是出现了系统性的错误，二是当地环境的效应，三是未知的效应。要排除前两种可能性的话，我们和其他观测者会在全球网络中使用不同的测量工具。”

　　不过，这项观测报告始终没有发表，实验本身也遭到了阿莱的批评，阿莱认为观测时间太短了。更蹊跷的是，Noever 在实验后很快离开了 NASA 和学术界，跑到阿拉巴马州在一家小小的技术公司入职，随着他的离去这次跨国观测的数据也一同销声匿迹了。

　　在1999年的跨国观测时，NASA 曾表示，研究者至少需要10年的时间才能让这场争论平息。果不其然，到了2009年，还有研究者在试图重复阿莱效应。

　　2009年7月22日的日食期间，中科院的物理学家们在杭州、湖州、上海、武汉四处进行了实验。不过，这次观测没有发现阿莱现象或任何引力异常，结果发表在2013年的中文期刊《地球物理学报》上。

　　阿莱现象就像一个飘荡在引力理论上的幽灵，许多物理学家不相信它的存在，因为对阿莱现象的解释大都非主流。

　　比如其中一个经常被科幻片提名的理论叫做引力屏蔽效应（gravitational shielding effect）。引力屏蔽效应指的是，两个物体间的重力加速度 g 会因为第三者的存在而发生变化。

　　按照这种理论，当月球挡在太阳前，也就是发生日食的时候，地球上的重力加速度会降低。这就好比如果你把一头大象垫在屁股下面当坐垫，那么地球对你的引力就降低了，你会感觉轻飘飘的如同插上了护翼。

　　荷兰代尔夫特理工大学的物理学研究者 Chris Duif 则表示，虽然他不太相信阿莱现象存在，但确实需要把阿莱现象上的不确定性打破，如果这个现象被证明为真，那将是物理学的一大革命。

　　话说回来，为什么 NASA 会对这个饱受争议的现象如此感兴趣？

　　因为 NASA 也曾结结实实地遭遇引力异常啊，都好几次了。

　　NASA 发射的两个空间探测器先驱者10号（1972年）和先驱者11号（1973年）在离开太阳系时均出现了无法解释的加速。伽利略号探测器（1990年12月）和会合-舒梅克号太空探测卫星（1998年）也曾获得来历不明的加速buff。

　　美国火箭之父韦恩赫尔·冯·布劳恩（Werner von Braun）听说了阿莱的发现后感到很激动，他认为阿莱现象或许可以解释这种莫名其妙的加速，他是站阿莱这一边的。

　　不管怎么说，阿莱对自己的跨界搅浑水感到很开心，他曾说：“我在理论物理和应用物理学里的研究乍看之下和我作为经济学家的主业相距甚远，但事实上这些研究给我带来了宝贵的体验。”

　　好嘛，经济学家一张嘴，物理学家跑断腿啊。
